Server swap bug update

Hi folks,

Our primary goal for the recent server move was to move us to a rock solid architecture that will allow us to grow quickly without any major problems along the way. A secondary goal was to create a system that diagnoses and fixes server problems before they get out of hand, and a tertiary goal was to automate things that would normally take up time that would be better used for building new features and fixing bugs. The great news is that we're well on our way to achieving all three!

Now for the bad news. It's no secret that the server swap didn't go as smoothly as we planned. Although there were several major issues, we're doing our best to get them resolved as quickly as possible and keep you in the loop along the way.

With that in mind, here's a quick update for you...

...cut...

As mentioned in a previous post, the main problem we ran into during our migration was an obscure bug in a software vendor's product that caused text entered into various places (like amazon and plexo descriptions) to be trimmed to 90 characters, followed by the text "...cut...". We resolved the problem by downgrading to an older version of the program, and we're working with the vendor to get the bug fixed permanently.

Security words/captchas

Security words should be working reliably again.

Amazon modules

We've done a lot of work in the past two days to make the Amazon modules more stable. If you're still having trouble with the module or losing products, please let me know by replying to this post!

Network issues/connection failed

Several lensmasters (particularly in Europe, but also a few in the US) are having trouble accessing Squidoo at all. It appears to be some kind of internet routing issue, and we are working with our web host to find a solution.

Lensrank/earnings/WIP/search

We were finally able to get lensrank running again, and you can look forward to it updating on the normal schedule from now on. Our search indexers are running now and should catch up within the next hour.

Royalty reporting is also working reliably again.

What else?

Am I missing something big? If so, please let me know.

As you can imagine, we're pretty much swamped with bug reports. Although we may not be able to reply to every one of them, please rest assured that your bug report(s) will be reviewed for any potential problems that may still be out there.

Thanks again everyone for your patience and support during the move.

Regards,
Gil

Re: Server swap bug update

Hi Gil,

You guys are fantastic. Thank you for all your hard work.

Are the connections to Delicious and Stumble Upon also affected by the Amazon problems?

What about disappearing pictures?

I am no longer getting email messages even though I am subscribed to topics on Squidu. Is this also related?

Re: Server swap bug update

I'm not aware of any issues related to Delicious and StumbleUpon. Could you describe them in more detail?

Pictures should not be disappearing. If you haven't already, please submit a bug report.

Are you having trouble receiving email from Squidoo or SquidU?

Re: Server swap bug update

Thanks for all the hard work, guys!! I know it's always exhausting having to cut down multiple unexpected hydra (Is that singular or plural? Man, I'm pedantic!) on a huge project.

Am trying to not be freaked out by the lensrank update. Had 10 WIPs I created yesterday that jumped up to the 60,000s and newly published lenses that didn't make it out of WIP. Not to mention that my top lens dropped hard. I want to think something's still wrong, but maybe not. :-( Will just continue working and be patient. I have faith it'll shake out eventually.

Hi Gil, Thanks for all the hard work and dedication you have put into this.  I am noticing that the "Join My Fan Club" links are not showing up out here on the forum when you click on a Squidoo Lens Master link? smile

Re: Server swap bug update

Gil, thanks for keeping us updated. smile

1.  My amazon problems and loss of products appears to have been fixed, so that is great!

2. Not sure if this is considered a big problem or even if it has anything to do with the update, but after yesterdays royalties update, I lost $17.94 in royalies across nine of my lenses.  I believe these are eBay sales, not amazon.  What is really odd, is the figures that are currently displayed on those particular lenses are the exact figures from a day or so ago.  I can send a bug report in with exact lenses and amounts if you need me to.   Let me know if I should do that.

Thanks again,
Janet~

Re: Server swap bug update

The security words are working--some of the time.  I can post a comment on a lens and it will work fine, but when I move on to the next lens, it tells me I have an invalid security word.  If I log out and back in again, it works.

I know you guys have been working hard and will have the glitches ironed out soon.  Keep up the good work!

Re: Server swap bug update

Hi Gil,

Delicious no longer has any results. I put in a bug report.

Stumble Upon seems to work until I hit enter and then I get a blank page. I assume you would normally get a confirmation.

I am not receiving emails from Squidu even though I have subscribed so that is why it has taken me so long to answer your above message.

Some emails from Squidoo telling me that I have been plexed are blank. Others are fine.

I just tried leaving comments and I am still having problems. If I refresh several times it will finally go through.

Keep up the great work, Gil, I'm sure all will be well soon.

Evelyn

Re: Server swap bug update

Hi Gil,

I just found another problem.

I was just trying to update www.squidoo.com/bluebirds and found that the links in the links lenses are multiplying.

If I open up the module to edit it the link will have multiplied 3 times and if I try again it will multiply 6 times.

I don't dare publish.

I don't think so because One they are newbees who just signed up, and two if you are a member of their fan club then the "Quit this fan club" link is also missing.

One way or another something is fishey, I think!  When I get back I will completely reboot my machine and make sure it isn't on my end.  smile

I just had the same problem with three list modules on my Asante Africa lens. Every item was multiplied 5 times and I couldn't delete the extra entries. I tried opening up the modules and republishing, but it didn't help. Bug report submitted...

Thanks for working so hard, Gil (and everyone else). It is appreciated!

Re: Server swap bug update

Hi Gil ( & Blake),

Thanks for giving upwhat was likely  to have been a weekend off after a long week due to the server migration, hope you didn't have too much planned that can be done at another time!

The one thing I noticed on one lens I had problems with earlier in the week, every module that seemed to rely on some form of rss or other had it's data wiped. The only thing remaining was the text I had inputted in  the intro to the module. I did submit a bug report, but have since gone and filled in the blanks.

This happened on RSS modules and poll modules, but it sounds like it may have happened on a few more modules that use some type of data feed too. Perhaps too vague a description to go on, but I thought it maybe worth mentioning as sometimes when bug hunting any hint or info can  help narrow the search. Just for reference it was bug report 22110, though I don't require any action on this lens now as have edited and republished.

Thanks Again! smile

I didn't see this thread before. I had already started a thread about this in "help please" section. I didn't think to look for a thread about it here. oh well. Here's a copy of the post I made over there...

Okay, I've never had this happen before and it won't stop.

I just started a new lens, and everything was going along okay, until I published it.  Two modules are duplicating themselves over and over and over and over again! The text list module and the link list module.

On the text list module there are 4 items listed on the list, but when you view the published version of the page, there are 92 items on the list! Each of the 4 items on the list are duplicated 23 times!

The link list module is doing the same thing. It should have 3 items on the list, but instead shows 69 items, again, each item is listed 23 times each!

OMG! What it happening? I tried removing the extra items on the list, but every time I take one off, 4 more of the same one instantly appear in it's place!

Has this happened to anyone else? Should I just remove the modules entirely and start over again?

here is the lens in question: http://www.squidoo.com/JoyInLife

PS

I tried to send a bug report about this, but I still can't send anything that requires a security code (comments, bug reports, ect) because every time I hit send it comes back telling me I entered the wrong security code.

Re: Server swap bug update

On my Grinch lens, some of the votes in the poll have just plain disappeared.

http://www.squidoo.com/thegrinch

"Stink, stank, stunk" used to be in the lead with about a dozen votes and most of them have vanished.

oh... forgot to mention... my mom said that on her dashboard, when she tried to approve comments, that all the buttons (approve/deny/ban) are gone, and so she can't approve comments anymore. She said she sent a bug report about it.

Re: Server swap bug update

What just happened??? I was logged in in to squidoo, viewing my dashboard and lenses, and the forum. All of a sudden I can't view any squidoo page. It says:

Server not found
Firefox can't find the server at www.squidoo.com.

I can't be without me squidoo!

Ok, I can still veiw Squidoo on Opera, but not on FireFox. Panic subsiding now.

Edit: Ignore my previous outburst. I dumped cookies and cache and now squidoo is loading in Firefox again.

Gil, thanks for all your hard work. I'm sure you guys will get it all fixed soon.

Re: Server swap bug update

I just wanted to say that I think the Squidoo chiefs are doing a fantastic job. It is my experience that upgrades, software changes etc never go smoothly no matter how much preparation, testing etc is done. That is the nature of IT.

Anyway I'm sure you will have the problems sorted soon and Squidoo will be better than ever.
