SquidWho's Official Unveiling

SquidWho?  You!

Are you into Elvis, Brittany, or Benifer?  How about your aunt Susan, masseuse Megan, or favorite hometown band?  Famous or not, Squidoo is all about people, and our new SquidWho project is putting the spotlight on people who matter to you.

http://www.squidoo.com/squidwho/hq

SquidWho works just like Squidoo - we just give you a jumpstart.  When you do a search for someone who isn't yet in our database, we'll generate a new lens shell for you with info from Wikipedia, Yahoo! news, and Amazon.com.  Then you can add links, the top reasons you love them, and anything else your heart desires to create a one-stop fan page for the person of your choice.  So what if the person of your choice isn't an international star?

Squidoo knows you don't have to be famous to be important, but being important just might help make you famous!  That's why SquidWho is open to any person, band, or group, from your hometown radio DJs and favorite teachers, to political figures you support and celebrities you idolize.  But that's not all.

Squidoo is also about being at your best, so when you do a search for your favorite rock star or cousin, you'll automatically go to the best lens.  Not seeing YOUR lens as the top lens?  Add some more modules, dig up some great trivia, and beef up the links.  You might just make it to the top and become famous in your own right!

Just a note - SquidWho is special for people.  You can still make your favorite lenses about animals, minerals, and vegetables at good ole' Squidoo.com.

See you on SquidWho!

Re: SquidWho's Official Unveiling

What exactly is the criteria for "best" lens?  One of my lenses on a celebrity has a 5.0 rating, and ranks over 8,000 positions higher than the lens that SquidWho brings up when you search for that person.

Another one of my lenses also ranks roughly 8,000 better than the SquidWho featured lens, but mine's only rated 4.0 in that case.

This isn't a huge deal - the more lenses the merrier, and I'll work to improve mine - but I'm just curious.  If this is top-secret Squidoo/SquidWho information, do any lensmasters have any ideas, based upon if your lenses made the cut?

The highest ranked SquidWho branded lens for that specific main keyword.

So if I had a lens on Chris Meloni on Squidoo, and one on Chris Meloni on SquidWho, just the SquidWho lens would show up when searched for on SquidWho.  If there were 20 lenses for Brittany Spears on Squidoo, but none on SquidWho, when you do your initial search on SquidWho it would generate a new one.  Let's say another 20 get added to SquidWho.  Searches on SquidWho will bring up the top SquidWho lens for Spears.

If you want the lens to show up on SquidWho as the top lens, make sure the PRIMARY tag is the exact name of the person.  And then of course have the best lensrank for that tag.  smile

NOPE does not work, try Babe Ruth search in Squidwho search box

http://www.squidoo.com/Babe-Ruth/
This one ranked 356 does not show up in Squidwho search but instead a Babe Ruth lens ranked 23,000 shows up

Re: SquidWho's Official Unveiling

Does SquidWho's "not yet beta" state mean  you'd rather have some time to work out bugs for your selves, or do you also want us to let you know when we run across things that don't work?

P.S.   The things that do work are super awesome!

Re: SquidWho's Official Unveiling

First this is great fun!

Two questions:

1. Does SquidWho work for a "Who is" with Organizations?

2. How long does it take for a SquidWho page to go live in the system?

I did three pages yesterday, one on Diana Princess of Wales (which is live and only showing as Diana Princess of Wale...) one on Josh Groban and one on Bindi Irwin, neither of which are live if I search, but they show up live as Squidwho pages if I pull them up.

Thanks,

P.S. The Diana Princess of Wales is in memory of the 10th Anniversary of her death this Friday.

Re: SquidWho's Official Unveiling

beta, are your lenses squidoo ones or squidwho ones?  The excellent Kimberly can convert your squidoos to squidwhos, but you have to email her by Friday (tomorrow).

Squidteam, I love the way you have set these up--thanks for a very cool new tool!

Re: SquidWho's Official Unveiling

Does SquidWho work for a "Who is" with Organizations?

If you do a page on Microsoft and have a biography module for each of that top five players, we can wiggle that into SquidWho.  If it is about the business model, that can be done on Squidoo.  If you do a Squidoo lens that is about Seth and Megan and Gil and Corey, that can fit.  Non-people lenses are simple moved to Squidoo, no hard feelings.

2. How long does it take for a SquidWho page to go live in the system?

It's the same as Squidoo lenses.  After they "rollover" with your stats.  All of yours are showing live for me.

I gotz bugs!

Send ONE email to me with your bug issues and I'll personally deliver it.  kimberly at squidoo.com

Re: SquidWho's Official Unveiling

Kimberly

Thanks for checking for me. I often have caching problems, because I am working on several things at the same time and hate rebooting.

I could see the lenses live, but when I typed in the search terms, I was still getting that nothing existed in the system.

I am also wondering a bit about this...

What happens to the other 19 SquidWho lenses on Brittany?

Do they get reindexed and show up in Squidoo.com, or do they get buried in Davey Jones's Locker, in oblivion?

Thanks,

Re: SquidWho's Official Unveiling

Since this is still new, is it possible that searching from the main page or any of the squidwho search boxes is still in beta and isn't registering the new pages or the variants on the new pages.

I searched for J K Rowling and JK Rowling (the top Squidwho) and was invited to create a new page. It only worked when I typed in JKRowling with no spaces. The current top squidwho is for JKRowling.

Re: SquidWho's Official Unveiling

What happens to the other 19 SquidWho lenses on Brittany?

Go to http://www.squidoo.com/squidwho/hq and type in Chris Meloni.  Gasp!  Already taken.  But in the top right you'll see a link to Explore More: Chris Meloni.  When you go there, you'll see any other Chris Meloni links.

I searched for J K Rowling and JK Rowling (the top Squidwho) and was invited to create a new page. It only worked when I typed in JKRowling with no spaces. The current top squidwho is for JKRowling.

The same thing will happen if you type in Kimberly Wells instead of Kimberly Dawn Wells, or type in Kim Wells.  Right now it just recognizes me as Kimberly Dawn Wells.  Or if you spell Brittany as Brittney.  (Actually if you type in Kimberly Dawn Wells it goes to my Buckcherry lens...still working on those little glitches.)  But kdwells goes to me.

But anyway...
Just like glitches on Squidoo, this will all sort itself out, so if you start early by building up your lenses, you'll come out on top in the end.  If you wait, tsk tsk...you know what.  wink

Re: SquidWho's Official Unveiling

Yesterday I typed in Will Smith and got a page about Jesus.  In general, when I type in a name it tries to help me make a new page, even for lenses I've already created.  That's all I meant about bugs--nothing on the actual pages.

The SAME thing happened to me.

I couldn't believe it.

I tried a second time though and got a page on Will Smith.

And got to watch the trailer for his next film I Am Legend for the first time.

It would be good if squidwho.com didn't redirect to http://www.squidoo.com/squidwho/hq

But the results being squidoo.com/~whatever would be fine.

The new link has nothing to do with the searching, it's just finally redirecting.  Is that what you were getting at?

I mean that www.squidwho.com is what it says in the browser URL. Currently it redirects to http://www.squidoo.com/squidwho/hq

It would probably work better for the purposes of SEO and PageRank to be a domain unto itself. People who bookmark the page will be bookmarking www.squidwho.com rather than http://www.squidoo.com/squidwho/hq

When people start talking about it in the same breath as www.imdb.com they'll tell their friends but if they go to their favourites and bring up http://www.squidoo.com/squidwho/hq it won't have the same impact as www.squidwho.com

Re: SquidWho's Official Unveiling

If you still want to tell someone squidwho.com go for it, but there won't be any pages created under that domain. They're all going to be under squidoo.com.  To create two separate sites would divide the search and admin features, and confuse a heck of a lot of people.

Results appearing under squidoo.com is fine.

Just having squidwho.com redirect to the longer URL may cause confusion as far as branding is concerned.

If your Squidoo lenses are set to 100% cash payout, will your Squidwho lenses be the same?  If not, how do you set them to cash?
