*The Forum Rules.
Yep, rules. Read 'em. Abide by 'em. Or your sea creature powers may be revoked. Temporarily, or for good.
1. New to the lounge? Get started here. Learn which category to post your note in, and create a forum signature.
2. Spam: just don't do it. Thou also shalt not fill the forums with multiple threads on the same topic or sockpuppet.
3. Thou shalt not flame, harass, denigrate, spam, malign, or otherwise finger-point and name-call at ANYONE. This one's a biggy. This too can get you banned.
4. Squidstaff love interacting with smart front-line people, so they stop by the forums from time to time to hear your ideas and share updates. However, this isn't the place to post bugs or solicit admin action. Please send those requests through our feedback link.
5. The SquidU forum is a place for users to interact, to share ideas and inspiration (and yes, gripes... maybe another lensmaster can help) and have fun with their lenses. Try searching for an answer or visiting The Answer Deck.
I first saw the new ads on someone else's lens and then checked mine. Please say this isn't going to be permanent. It makes the pages look like just another commercial site. Not to mention that it makes the pages longer, when I'm already trying my darndest to keep them compact.
This is a bad. bad move and completely undermines my enthusiasm about Squidoo.

I agree - I liked it much better when they were on the side. I hate having the first thing I see on a site be an ad - makes me click off it because I think they are only trying to sell something. Please change it back.
Offline
Why'd we make that change? We want to help lensmasters earn more royalties as a co-op.
The Google ads weren't doing a lot in the sidebar, so we're testing their performance in a new location.
Based on how the relocation works -- and lensmaster and reader feedback -- we'll decide whether this becomes permanent. Thanks for the early feedback!

Google ads are over, I thought - but in any case, YUCK. I'll be concentrating elsewhere until this gets fixed.

Hate to say it, JaZ, but I feel the same way. I have a lens almost ready to go live, one that's very important to me and part of a larger project, but I'm going to wait until this ad business is settled one way or the other. I planned to publish it tomorrow, but now I'm just going to sit on it.

How about letting this be an option (sidebar vs. top of lens) that the lensmasters can toggle?
Personally, I use Firefox's Adblock extension, and it's set to block Google ads -- I just see a little empty gray bar up top there. I didn't know what it was until I saw the uproar here in the lounge.

That's right, my impression is that ever more people are using Adblock on their Firefox.

Let the Lensmaster control placement of Google ads by making it a module!
Easy to do.

Optional placement is a great idea. There's a big difference between lenses that are commercially oriented, where the top ads wouldn't be out of place, and strictly informative ones, where blatant advertising is totally inapropriate.

Make a opt-in higher rate Co-op for those lensmasters who put Google ads right into Lens.
Cheers

I am really sad about this. I waited until the end of the day, hoping the nonsense would be over. I agree with y'all that I don't have enthusiasm for this. With all the crap on the page you can't even tell what the lens is for without scrolling down. Worthless.
You (Squidoo) have hooked us by being about content. If you keep this approach, you'll have to recruit new lensmasters who have different priorities.

Be patient, Angela. Heath said that this is a test. The question is whether they are going to hang on to it long enough to see if it makes a difference in click throughs or whether they will listen to our comments and objections and work out some kind of alternative. So far, the response to our concerns has been good, but this is a bigger issue, so it may also be a test of how much input we actually have.

To all concerned: we are definitely listening. We are merely testing the waters to try something new. Please bare with us.

Thanks for the feedback, Mr. Squidoo-Engineer. But I have to say, I don't really appreciate the sexual harassment! No, I most certainly won't bare with you! (I will, however, bear with you.) :-)

Hi
I would be interested to know how much of an increase in income it results in.
If alot, then I am all for it ![]()

Even if it does increase profits, I'll be against it. It doesn't suit the kind of work I'm trying to do. It ridicules me and impairs my concentration. I'm confident that the problem will be solved, but if by some unfortunate chance it isn't, I'll simply have to delete my lenses, and export their content elsewhere (on my website probably). I won't regret having made the experiment, it was very inspiring and instructive, thank you all etc., but I can't have a social life with ads tattooed on my forehead.

Wuming, I might tolerate it for the lenses I already have, but not for some still upcoming. The blatant commercialism would undercut them severely, especially knowing that there simply aren't any possible relevant ads. This morning I'm thinking again (for the first time in a long time) about hosting, domain names, etc.

2 ads might do better. Now I currently get 3 ads where there could be 4 or should be 2. Having three just too much shifts the title of the lens down.
My suggestion is make it 2 in a space that has just as much vertical px as required. Perhaps you can even cram the three ads together in that space.

I am adding my voice to the people who say - "Ads on top = YUCK"
Particulary because on at least two of my lenses the ads are completely inappropriate and even offensive. For example, I have a lens for the Catholic Church in my community and the ad that comes up says:
Accused Catholic Priests
List of Those Accused of Sex Abuse Also Secret Church Documents
www.BishopAccountability.org
I think the ads devalue the whole purpose of lenses providing useful information. At least if they're along the side-bar they don't interfere, but across the top is terrible.
My 2 cents.

What bugs me the most is that on 1024 x 768, the ads push the content so far down that you can't even tell what the page is doing. Do the developers have higher resolution screens? (Surely they test on several resoulutions.)
Why is the layout so narrow anyway? The ads could be in some of that wasted space on the left side.

You mean you haven't noticed, Angela, how you could fit skyscraper banner ads down those sides?
That was the pessimistic part of my brain responding. The optimistic part thinks the site probably works and scales for people who still run 15" monitors at mid-range resolutions like my Dad.
Really, I'm perfectly fine just watching and seeing what happens for now.

Hi
I am for letting Squidoo collect some stats from this experiment, which will take a few weeks to get a feel for how much the income will improve.
Note for those who want to jump ship, both Google and Microsoft now offer ad free websites at no charge

LOL, a submissive voyeur!
Anywho, I agree about using that wasted sidebar area for the ads. The lenses are waaay too vertical for comfortable reading already.

I feel like a traitor. But an idea hit me, and I was too lazy to make a site from scratch, so I built one here. Forgive me, brothers! It doesn't mean I've abandoned the cause. It was just so FUN.

P.S. Rachel, I plan to add a link to your Discordian site, and Jeffry, to your Area 51 site. I just haven't yet. Nice google page, Jeffry.
