*The Forum Rules.
Yep, rules. Read 'em. Abide by 'em. Or your sea creature powers may be revoked. Temporarily, or for good.
1. New to the lounge? Get started here. Learn which category to post your note in, and create a forum signature.
2. Spam: just don't do it. Thou also shalt not fill the forums with multiple threads on the same topic or sockpuppet.
3. Thou shalt not flame, harass, denigrate, spam, malign, or otherwise finger-point and name-call at ANYONE. This one's a biggy. This too can get you banned.
4. Squidstaff love interacting with smart front-line people, so they stop by the forums from time to time to hear your ideas and share updates. However, this isn't the place to post bugs or solicit admin action. Please send those requests through our feedback link.
5. The SquidU forum is a place for users to interact, to share ideas and inspiration (and yes, gripes... maybe another lensmaster can help) and have fun with their lenses. Try searching for an answer or visiting The Answer Deck.
This thread is a placeholder right now.
We're about to announce some new policies regarding the do's and dont's on Squidoo, and as such, I wanted a fair and open place that lensmasters could talk to other lensmasters specifically about it. If you're not sure if your lenses violate these new policies, try posting one or two of them here (ask nicely) and maybe some Angels and other veteran lensmasters will help with some feedback or advice.
This thread won't be monitored by official SquidooHQ, however, and decisions about locking and deleting lenses are ultimately made by Squidoo. That said, your frontline lensmasters usually know best!
Thanks in advance for keeping this here as a productive peer-driven feedback thread on our (coming soon) new Squidoo policies.
P.S. Note to Angels: Do what you want! You're welcome to take a pass on participating in this thread. And please stay tuned for more information on all this, coming your way from Kimberly and me next week. Thanks.

Looks like the lack of response to this thread shows that people who publish "Squidonts" or lenses that may be regarded as very close to "Squidonts" are not active members of the Forum.

.... or don't want us to notice a lens or few?

Well, I for one am not sure... I might be publishing quite a few future Squiddonts... I just found out about this today.
I write a lot of articles... some of my lenses highlight my writing. My articles are often always posted on the same domains. Such as these lenses:
What I've Been Writing About
Smart Ways to Live Frugally
Bible Articles I Have Written
My Movie Reviews
Survivor Tocantins - This is my fourth best lens!
Survivor Samoa - My number one lens right now... although I have not exceeded the 9 link limit at this point, in order for me to post lengthy reviews on every single episode during the season (like I did with Tocantins), I will exceed the limit.
Unless Epinions and Associated Content are whitelisted, I'm not sure what I will do... probably about half of my lenses will be SquidDon'ts. I've heard that the review process can take weeks... and I'm guessing it will take months while the change is being undertaken. Some of my lenses, like Survivor Samoa, are highly time-sensitive, and if the review process does take months, it will drive away traffic during the peak time for the lens. I'm not trying to sell something with spam... I try to make all my links to helpful resources that other people might find useful. Does it benefit me when people read my articles? Well, yes it does... but I hope that at the same time the content that I link to benefits other people just as much or more.
Offline
Woo hoo! Found a whitelist and Associatedcontent is okay. I'll suggest epinions as well... but even if they don't whitelist it at least I'll only have to edit/delete my lenses that have reviews on stuff.
Offline
By all means, suggest. There could be more lensmasters using epinions also.

I know this lens violates the too many links part of the new policy, but would you consider it spam or even just a bad lens? Please be kind.
Any one have any ideas on how to change it so it wouldn't get me in trouble?

Got to feed the puppies and go to bed. I will check back in the morning to see if I have any replies.
Thanks in advance for any help.

You have just said yourself that it " violates the too many links part of the new policy"

as above
I really don't want to visit just to give you a hit when you already say that you know it violates TOS. Let us know when you have reworked it.

I think that it's a useful lens, but did you cut and paste all those game descriptions? That would remove the unique part of the equation. I'm just a normal poster, so take my ideas with a grain of salt, but could you include one link to the web site, with maybe a list of all the games that you can find below it, a little like you are doing? And if you're cutting and pasting those descriptions, rewrite them to bring a little of your own opinion and ideas into the game descriptions. As far as the topic of game downloads, I'm still trying to learn these new rules myself :-)

Thank you for the replies. I believe I have an idea on what to do with it. Have to mull it over for a day though.

Another question... are all fitness lenses now going to be SquidDon'ts? I have a lens about how to get fit using the internet that includes links to reputable sites like Sparkpeople, the government's virtual walk program, etc., and I'm wondering if I should go take it elsewhere. I'm also working on a lens that discusses the benefits of walking and how you can lose weight by burning calories through walking (no vitamins, supplements, or medicine is discussed), and I'm wondering if I should scrap that one? The information is useful, and it isn't selling anything, but with all these new restrictions, I'm afraid they'll end up locking my account for publishing on these topics.
I know they said don't panic... but I'm a rules following type of person and I'm kind of nervous. I wrote one sentence in one of my lenses once about how gambling was bad and can ruin your life, and I was surprised to find that I was making a SquidDon't page and redid the page rather than risk someone looking at it by hand and banning me from Squidoo.

I'd consider any lens where the text of games descriptions has been cut and pasted from other websites to be a lens that has far bigger problems than the number of links. This is beyond spam or merely a bad lens. It's called plagiarism. You won't even have to wait for the new policies to take effect for that lens to get locked. Plagiarism is already a violation of TOS.
If you want to get anywhere on Squidoo, write your own content. I know it's more work, but it's also a whole lot more honest than plugging in someone else's words and passing them off as your own.
So to answer the question in the thread title: Yes.

OK Ricky - I am going to be honest here, this is really not my kind of lens but I can see how it will be useful to other people.
However, looking at it from a content and promotion point of view AND keeping the interest of your readers, this is what I would do:
Rewrite the intro to include the phrases "Games for the Gamer" and "Download free trial games" in the first couple of sentences - these are the ones Google searchers will see and they are your KEY words.
After completely rewriting the reviews
I'd split the lens into multiple lenses. Categorise the games (you have already done that to a certain extent anyway) and make a lens for each category. Also split them up according to rating (G, PG, Adult etc). Some games will probably appear in more than one category, but that's OK.
Then make sure there's no more than seven or eight games in each category so that you do not exceed the max number of links and put them into a lens just for that category.
Feature the lenses about games that are relevant to each lens in the Featured lenses module.
Then make a lensography that links to all of the lenses.
Move the Do You like this lens module to the bottom - it's too near the top.
Also, try to put more modules to make the lenses more interesting. What about a Poll module asking people if they have played any of these games. Ask people to vote on their favourite.
And if you have tried any of these games then give a personal review and recommendation.
Hope this helps ![]()

What does it mean - too many links?
Offline
Rick you need to read the newsflash on the SquidBlog AND the email you have been sent! ![]()
Non-Giants will only be allowed a max of 9 outgoing links to the same webpage unless they are on a Squidoo "whitelist" e.g Amazon etc

Aj - thanks for the heads up - it was in my spam category - LOL.
The thing that I still don't understand is can we have 15 clickbank links to DIFFERENT clickbank products or is 9 clickbank products the limit on ONE lens?
Likewise, can we have the same clickbank ads on DIFFERENT lenses? Doesn't seem clear to me.

The limit is within each lens. You can have nine links to each domain per lens.
Nine per domain. If an affiliate site redirects things through their domain, you get nine. Choose them well.

Frankly, I think this idea --------. (put in any negative word).
My clickbank ads on my main lens constitute all of about 5% of my 200+ links - but, it exceeds 9.
Again, I see NO reason for a restriction if it isn't a major part of what you are offereing on a lens. Indeed, I have NO lenses dedicated to clickbank products -- THAT is what they should be restricting -- lenses that ONLY sell and don't offer a benefit.
As I said, this -------

I am sure I read somewhere that if a page has more than 9 links to the same domain, then Google may consider the page as Spam - the more it does that with Squidoo pages, then the more it hurts the site and everyone who is publishing on it.
Katinka - you would know whether that is right or not. Where are you?

I also find a thread STARTED by HQ - that is NOT monitored - to be hilarious. Yeah, right.

This means they will not be publicly giving their opinions of each individual lens, it doesn't mean they won't be stopping by and reading the posts. I'm sure they will.

So does anybody know if they're planning on banning all fitness and exercise web sites yet? I mean, walking and exercising is about as natural a way to lose weight (and belly fat) as it comes. I still have to figure out whether I need to delete my Get Fit With the Internet and Benefits of walking lens that is in the works. If they want to scrap all the weight loss lenses they're going to have to get rid of hundreds of lenses.

This is a strange way to address the junk lenses on Squidoo.
