*The Forum Rules.
Yep, rules. Read 'em. Abide by 'em. Or your sea creature powers may be revoked. Temporarily, or for good.
1. New to the lounge? Get started here. Learn which category to post your note in, and create a forum signature.
2. Spam: just don't do it. Thou also shalt not fill the forums with multiple threads on the same topic, sockpuppet, or link to irrelevant and non-Squidoo sites (includes signatures).
3. Thou shalt not flame, harass, denigrate, spam, malign, or otherwise finger-point and name-call at ANYONE. This one's a biggy. This too can get you banned.
4. Squidstaff love interacting with smart front-line people, so they stop by the forums from time to time to hear your ideas and share updates. However, this isn't the place to post bugs or solicit admin action. Please send those requests through our feedback link.
5. The SquidU forum is a place for users to interact, to share ideas and inspiration (and yes, gripes... maybe another lensmaster can help) and have fun with their lenses. Try searching for an answer or visiting The Answer Deck.
He's alive and living in Las Vegas. Oh wait, that's Elvis.
Over the past near-week our vigilant lensmasters have noticed a problem with LensRank - it wasn't moving!
Normally, we're able to get on top of things like that pronto, but this week was a bit different because poor Gil was actually on vacation! And when he takes a vacation or blinks for too long, things like LensRank like to go booger-eyed and cause problems. We tried to fix it, but it wouldn't budge. It was waiting for Gil's magic touch. So please know that he's home, it's his top priority, and the official timeline for having it fixed is two days tops.
(We say that because once we work our magic, some of the rest of it runs automatically and needs time to catch up. Depending on how busy our database is, that can take a while. )
It's especially crazy when multiple things break at once. When Yahoo traffic took a dive some people were afraid it was personal, but it turns out it wasn't, had nothing to do with us at all, and that the folks at Yahoo are very responsive about finding a solution. When LensRank breaks around the end of the month, that's stressful because people are thinking about payday. But all the little glitches are totally separate issues, and most of them are happily minor. We're not going anywhere, and Squidoo isn't getting poised to blow up or break down.
Thanks for your patience while we work out the kinks, and thanks for helping us find them. The more info we can get about things like this, the better choices we can make about building up our infrastructure for the future. This means getting the technology support for a growing community, and the right amount of communication to prevent rumors and let you know we're still working hard to help you create great lenses. Without you, there wouldn't be a Squidoo.
Thanks for listening!
~Kimberly

BTW, now is a super awesome time to work hard on all those new lenses. You'll be well poised for a healthy bump when LR updates!

Thx Kimberly - best post this in the chatter box

This is in the Official Announcements section because I've posted in the Chatterbox a few times. It keeps getting covered up. ![]()
Plus this is one of THE official places to get info from HQ, so you can check here in the future for other notes and announcements.

I only meant to point them to here (hopefully it will alieviate any worries)

I don't really feel it's my place to pass the buck by saying we can't do anything because Gil is on vacation. Vacations don't stop time and progress. But with our luck, I guess they stop LensRank. When it came down to the rest of us trying to fix it and not having the exact resources to do it on our own, I cracked!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the update! We've waited a week, a couple more days shouldn't be a problem. I think a lot of people have been creating during this problem. I knew you guys were working on it. I just figured it was something big. Glad to hear it wasn't. To MsSnow4a, every time someone new posted a question about the Lensrank, someone answered them. That's the beauty of being on Squidoo, we all help each other.

yes people are very good about that. Im jut saying hat some newbies may not even know this place exists yet. so they wouldnt have a clue. Anyways good to have some kind of info on it.

With all due respect, the worst time for sw engineers to take a vacation is right at the moment of code change. Been there (on the tech support and end user side), and I know it ain't pretty ... so I feel for ya, but Murphy's law and good engineering practices recommend not doing it.
The unfortunate results when/if a hiccup or worse - breakage- occurs in the system are what we're seeing here: endless end user discussion, lots of frustration, client/member loss of confidence or perhaps even loss of participants, yadayadayada - yo, Seth, it's A MARKETING NIGHTMARE.

That is why some of us squids do make our rounds in other communities. I try to direct people to here as much as I possibly can. I found it does actually help a lot.
Thank you Kimberly for the update.

I agree, and he didn't.
He was gone before that. We definitely don't plan on things going wrong, at any point, and are always working on updating our infrastructures to prevent these things from happening in the first place.

Perhaps people who have been on Squidoo for a couple of years are more relaxed about this, I can only speak for myself, but although I noted the lack of update on lensrank, I wasn't worried about it and when I saw that the attempt to update it the other day resulted in every lens being 0 lensrank a) I knew it was being worked on and b) I knew it would be fixed soon enough.
It isn't as if it's the first time the lensrank machine has broken, granted it has taken a little longer to fix this time but, let's face it, it affects everyone equally so at the end of the day it really makes very little difference whether lensrank updates every day or occasionally due to a glitch misses a couple of days.
Squidoo gives us a fabulous garden to play in but every once in a while something will go pear shaped. Everyone at Squidoo works very hard FOR US, put yourself in their shoes sometime and try to imagine how it must feel to see some of the posts there have been.
Whether or not Gitotherescue is the only programmer is neither here nor there, he has his name for a very good reason ... he's the best ![]()

Even some of us whom have been here close to a year are not even worried. I have always known that things will work out.

I've been checking here for a week now. We're at your mercy. If you don't tell us anything, we don't know anything.

I totally agree with that quote. I just hope things get fixed already and in the promised time frame. It's been quite some down time.

Excellent post, and so is everyone else.

Due to the fact that very few lensmasters actually come to the forum let alone find the official announcement sub forum, may I suggest next time something like this happens you use the best tool for disseminating information to all lensmasters, the BLUE BOX.
