*The Forum Rules.
Yep, rules. Read 'em. Abide by 'em. Or your sea creature powers may be revoked. Temporarily, or for good.
1. New to the lounge? Get started here. Learn which category to post your note in, and create a forum signature.
2. Spam: just don't do it. Thou also shalt not fill the forums with multiple threads on the same topic, sockpuppet, or link to irrelevant and non-Squidoo sites (includes signatures).
3. Thou shalt not flame, harass, denigrate, spam, malign, or otherwise finger-point and name-call at ANYONE. This one's a biggy. This too can get you banned.
4. Squidstaff love interacting with smart front-line people, so they stop by the forums from time to time to hear your ideas and share updates. However, this isn't the place to post bugs or solicit admin action. Please send those requests through our feedback link.
5. The SquidU forum is a place for users to interact, to share ideas and inspiration (and yes, gripes... maybe another lensmaster can help) and have fun with their lenses. Try searching for an answer or visiting The Answer Deck.
I started my guide to twitter today. I still plan on adding more info to it, but I believe that lensmasters should read and consider the module I wrote called "Make Your Tweets Your Own".

You're right, that's the key module in your lens.
We'll see, I still haven't joined Twitter yet.
I challenge you to give me more reasons to join.

I joined twitter about a month or two ago. Around the same time I joined squidoo. I like it. I don't like following people that update with spam constantly. However, I know I've looked at some links people post, use it now and then, and have gotten traffic to my sites through it.

I am also a Twitter member and it brings me some traffic here and then. It is useful website and tool for friends.

Amen! I just requested a solution to all those junk tweets.

The great thing about Twitter is you can choose not to follow people you think are spamming. And if they ask why, well...they asked!

I like that I can see what people are saying and ignore it when I want, and follow and unfollow as I wish. ![]()

Jeff,
I have a few thoughts about how lensmasters can leverage twitter:
1. Squidoo has built a Tweet feature when you update your lens. The automatic Twitter after an update is nice, but need enhancement. The tweet wording is basically static. Instead there should be an option to edit the tweet before it is sent. This would allow the addition of hash tags or other details or keywords that would add value to the tweet. Until the twitter update feature is enhanced, I'd recommend that people use the message box that pops up after a lens update simply as a reminder to manually create a customized tweet about the update.
2. The real value of Twitter to lensmasters is not outgoing tweets, in my opinion, but the value of Twitter feeds within Lenses. Content is king, and a Twitter feed can add detail and value to many lenses that are focused on specific subjects. That's where the three Twitter modules can best be used:
Twitter Follow module is pretty straight forward. It's like an RSS feed of a particluar individual's blog. Only in this case it follows one user. It would be nice if there could be multiple follows rolled into one Squid Twitter follow module (another enhancement idea!). This would be sorta like rolled several RSS feeds into another feed. This way trusted tweets from people that post on a similar subject or from the same organization could appear in the same feed. Less spam, more value. Who is currently using Twitter Follow module? It would be interesting to see a direct link to their module as a reply here.
Twitter Search module is what I've made most use of on my lenses. You can use a keyword, but may get (somewhat) less spam if you enter a hash code for your search term (for example, #greatlakesloons or #hcmktg). These are some examples that I've implemented, and I think it would be great if someone created a directory of people effectively using such modules in their lenses:
All a Twitter about the Loons
Following Healthcare Marketing on Twitter
Humble Detective Subject of Twitter Tweets
Twitter Storm module - I must admit that it sound interesting: "ask your twitter followers a question and gather responses in one handy place." But I'd like to see some implementations of how this can be used. This might be most useful if people have Twitter accounts that are business or subject focused since if your followers are a hodgepodge, it might not be as effective. Or maybe not. Again, who is using this module that we all could study?
3. There is hidden value in Twitter as a reserch tool for lensmasters. Following tweets related to the subject of your lens can turn up new and interesting tidbits to incorporate into your lens. This is a great idea because it's content-focused. For example, as I was building my Charlie Chan lens, I found a tweet about a website running a contest where the prize was recent reprinting of one of the early Charlie Chan novels by Earl Derr Biggers. Now, what I should do is go back and create a quick text module about that contest and tweet, facebook and squidcast about that valuable information, as appropriate. Twitter, like stumbleupon, is filled with cool interesting stuff and could really waste my time if I didn't have the excuse that it was related to my Squidoo lens building!

Jeff - typo in that key module - "if you are looking or followers from outside of Squidoo". Missing an "f" on for.
Nice job. I think this is the kind of thing I would send to my mom if she ever got on twitter. Covers all the basics.

I honestly wish I could get into the whole Twitter thing, but it just ain't happening However, I do regularly receive emails letting me know that so and so is now following me. I have no idea who they are and no idea why they are following someone that never tweets! By the time I finally 'get it', the Twitter phase will have passed and it will no longer be thing to do. ![]()

Twitter has brought me some traffic and I even referred 8 people in about 10 seconds to look at a link I used to get a free ebook. This is a great achievement because most of the time I feel uncomfortable refering people into stuff. You can always choose to unfollow someone and it is a great, easy way to get people into your blogs and squidoo pages. It is also growing exponentially, as it is easy to use.
If you don't share your pages, no one is going to visit you, that is the power behind social bookmarking sites and places like Twitter. It is very easy to go viral also ( just google twitter getter) and get massive amounts of targetted and especially UNtargetted traffic; bringing a whole new level for those who prefer to sacrifice some quality traffic in order to get massive traffic. If the rich and famous are doing it it's because of something.
BTW it is free to join.
The only negative thing I find about twitter is that it is filled with spammers and bots; but you can unfollow those.
my twitter username is share2love btw if you would like to follow me.
To your success:

I'd guess that most people who follow you are either fellow Squids or spammers whose accounts will have been deleted before you even get the e-mail! I get complete strangers following me who are musicians or fellow music bloggers, but sometimes I get a gung-ho marketer whose page of tweets are boring and irrelevant to me. Those I simply don't follow. Often, I click the link in the e-mail only to get a notice that the account has been closed for suspicious activity.

I haven't looke at twhirl, but I have tweet deck and I have been able to create groups using it.
I enjoy following links that people send me, but there are a few that I really like and I have separated them into their own group on tweet deck. It's a good practical solution. Now I have one column for everyone, and one for my "special" twitterers.
I'm seegreen1 on twitter.

I got into Twitter awhile ago and am moving towards 2000 followers and following almost as many.
I was told by my mentor that Twitter was the way to go and the reason is that you can get traffic moving towards your blogs--lenses--ebook promos--anything you like--and create great relationships in the process. And it is so cool how squidoo interfaces with twitter and facebook!!
My fav book on the topic is "Twitter Power" by Joel Comm.
Love it!!
And now am in the process of hooking up with you all here on Squidoo!!
My name is @kateloving on Twitter!!

I really like twitter ...for the simple fact i can post about me and give information on what I like.. and I sometimes use it a vent. My employees get on my nerves sometimes. You can also find other people who have the same interests and desires.

I know some affiliates who are making $100 per day from twitter but, I'm to lazy to follow it.

People don't ask why you unfollow them - unless you really do know them. I looked at my blogstats the other day and twitter is my third referrer ![]()
