While it is probably some glitch - what if the delay is to `try out' some different `weightings' and see how the whole list comes out `without' everyone seeing it. Over the course of 3 or 4 days - lots and lots of scenerio's could be tried (different weightings) -- and - without the `my lens ranked dropped' -- that would come with each `re-try' of the data.
Since all the other data seems `normal' and the only thing not updating is the LR -- that also seems to be a clue. I guess the real question at this point is -- will the new attribute ratings mean huge LR changes - or - just a tinkering.

He he, I'm with ya in the speculations. Don't you also think it's kinda strange that our moderator has posted on the forum during this time, and not mentioned a word about the delay?
The longer it goes without updating, the more curious I become. It should be very interesting to see the outcome.
Truthfully, I think they've been toying with the algorythm for a few weeks now.......as at one time I had 39 lenses in tier 1 and nearly 40 in tier 2...........and within 4 days they all went back to the LRanks they had before.

Personally, I think that the Lensrank algorithm has simply collapsed under the sheer weight of lenses, with the new purple stars being the final straw upon its back.

I agree Fluff,
Added to the sheer weight of lenses is the tendacy for angels to also bless the new purple star recipents, and the never ending activity of lensmasters promoting & publishing lenses to make 'giant'.

I guess my question is, with the lastest update now 95+ hours ago, why doesn't a moderator, tech, anyone post a small note on the announcement boards? This is the 5th day Ive checked and my #'s are the same as they were Thursday am. I'm new and trying to follow step by step instructions, but without a lens update I cant really see if Im heading in the right direction. I'm not to confident about a site that allows its members to wonder and speculate about a technical issue, all the while not saying a peep....I think 95 hours is much, I dunno

It would be a real bummer if you got a purple star, and the effect wore off before there was a lensrank update!

Purple stars carry a permanent lensrank boost, it never wears off!

Yes, this is making me nervous, now. Usually someone from HQ has said something about a malfunction like this long before now. It really started before the weekend. I can only surmise that they have no good news and are frantically working on the problem. I can only hope that the lensrank data is safe. Oh well, there is nothing I can do about it, but it's just so disappointing. I have been on a roll in my quest toward Giant 100 & this is slowing me down. If it's the purple stars, then put them on hold until things get back to normal.

Okay...if you have not seen this yet very funny lens about our current lensrank issue, lens was made by drifter

Oh dear - not sure I like the sound of that.

Me either. Doesn't quite seem fair to all the older lenses that have clawed their way to the top.

Then you need to submit your old timeless classics and get yourself a purple star! They are giving out 20 or so a week now compared to the 6 they started handing each week!

Don't worry too much - taken from the purple star lens
So what do you get?
why bother?
Purple star lenses are scarce and special.
1. If you earn one, you get a purple star badge right on the lens for everyone to see.
2. The lens gets a generous one-time editorial turboboost in LensRank.
3. You get entered into a quarterly lottery for big gifts ranging from iPods to $1000 to charity to iTunes gift certificates.
4. And as part of the Purple Star program, you Giant Squids get exclusive access to weekly themes. Brainstorm packages that could get your creativity flowing... and get you one step closer to that brand new purple-star-eligible new lens.
5. Last but not least, and perhaps the best benefit of all: You get a fun excuse to keep creating and innovating. A reason to keep making and playing on more new lenses.

Not all the Angels are blessing purple stars ![]()

I would happily do away with Giant Squids, Angels, Purple Stars and the like if it meant things ran smoother.
Edited to add - I wasn't clear here - they are fine and dandy. I was referring to the speculation that the purple stars were partly the cause of the lack of update.

Very very glad to hear that aj ![]()
Those 'generous one-time boosts' from the purple star award has already shown itself to be able to play havok with the top 100 and top in categories.
I guess the thing that still bothers me is that we have to submit our lenses to be considered for a purple star, the total has now went from 6 to 20 per week, and the emphasis is on new lenses.
Oh well, just picky me I guess......<gonna go in the corner now>

I'm sticking with my latest speculation. LensRank has gone into seclusion due to an inadvertent release of am LR/Hilton sex tape.

Is there a Lens explaining the Purple Star - I read on the forums that it was only awarded to Giants?

My guess is the 3 people that work at Squidoo all went on vacation the same week, assuming the other 2 would hit the update button once a day.

My theory is that the LR just took a well deserved long weekend in Tahiti.

To be honest, my traffic has been hit so hard by the Yahoo dilemma and the aftershock that my traffic is now down 5,000 weekly visitors. (the last time I looked). I haven't even loaded my dashboard in days now because it is just too darn depressing. Therefore, I hadn't even noticed the lensrank issue.
My personal opinion on the lensrank boosts for purple stars and Giant Squids, is get rid of them. I think all lenses, new and old, should earn their rankings through traffic, earnings, clickouts, etc. I think it disrupts the normal flow of lensrank too much. Plus, if a lens did crawl its way to the top on it's own merit only to be booted out of the way by a purple star or giant squid lensrank boost, I don't see the fairness in that. I think HQ should find another way to award these recipients without negatively impacting other lensmasters. Now, they are increasing the purple stars to 21 a week. Can you imagine the disruption that is going to happen then and how many lenses are going to be knocked out of the lensranking they have earned?
Also, I am a Squid Angel and I don't bless purple star lenses. The purple star will already give them a boost and additional recognition/comments/ratings. I don't see the need to bless them on top of that. I try to find the hidden gems, quality lenses not already in the spotlight , to bless.

Thanks for your patience while we sort out LensRank problems. I can guarantee there's no tape, but a vacation does sound nice. ![]()
(And thanks to anyone who reported it using the bug report form - that's how you get it done!)
