Are You Making a Living or a Loving on Squidoo?

Write What You Love & The Money Will Follow
I see messages flying around the forums about people disappointed how hard it is to make money on Squidoo or that there's other more profitable venues to make money writing online.  You can get a fast food job and make more money than Squidoo but would it be as fun?

Write Because You Love It
Digital scrapbooking, updating Facebook, painting, writing stories about yourself, your cat or in my case gossiping about Robert Pattinson's hair, who would expect to find a job listed in Craigslist or the newspaper that would pay you to do this for a living?

You Can Make More Money Flipping Burgers
As a gardener, I've had off the last 4 months and have been happily Squidooing.  I just started work again and got to thinking that if you made an hourly salary of $10/hour, without affiliate income, you would have to get 8 lenses into the Top 2000 and maintain it there for an entire month just to make the same income. Which is easier to do?  The hourly job.

Invest in Your Future. Community Manager & Online Content Manager Job Openings
For me, I know there will be a need for people who understand search engine optimization now and in the future.  Consider this the cheapest form of tuition you've ever paid in time.  It's like a thesis or grad project.  Consider your small earnings a stipend. As more and more people find content online, there will need to be people that help get it produced, found, etc.

Keep Squidooing
So for anyone that has read some of the discouraging comments as of late.  Hang in there.  There are some lensmasters who are making an honest living on Squidoo.  I'm not talking about the ones with meta-success, those that are successful writing about and selling Squidoo lenses and make-money programs.  There are others who are using the tools of Squidoo and affiliate programs to not only make money but create a life with flexibility so they can enjoy their time and spend more time with family and doing the things they love.

P.S.
....I gotta go for now, I hear Paris Hilton is after Robert Pattinson and need to update my lens just because I love celebrity gossip. Love Squidoo. I feel like a busker with cap in hand except instead of a jangly guitar, my muse is my p.c. I imagine I'm standing on some virtual corner, a soap box, a wooden milk crate begging people to toss in dollars as I pontificate about anything and everything.  Who else will pay me $11-$12/month to tell them about schtuff?

Re: Are You Making a Living or a Loving on Squidoo?

Adrienne,
I admit i was looking for a way to make a few extra bucks, just like my first lens "Im Squidooing"  says. But i found this squidoo place a very unique place. Money has taken a back burner.  So far i have made nill and i find i really do not care that much.  Im SQUIDOOING!!
Now i found helium long ago it not near as user friendly.  I should one day drag myself out of squidoo and see if i have made anything over there!!!! I doubt it!

I got a new idea for a lens out of this conversation going on in chatter!!! wink

Re: Are You Making a Living or a Loving on Squidoo?

GrannyNan, I have some articles on Helium too, and decided I just didn't like to jump through the hoops there. I hate being forced to rate someone else's writing. And thus I  will never see any of the money I've made over there, about 80 cent the last time I looked. On the bright side, I submitted everthing as non-exclusive and one of the articles has already made it's way over here, and another one is on the way.

I've done Associated Content and actually made some money there, but no longer have the time to devote to full length articles. I can always squeeze in a module or two though.

And my blogs are slowly drifting this way as well, because, 1, most never got any traffic, and 2, the ones that did don't make any money.

Squidoo is the cat's meow, in my opinion.

Re: Are You Making a Living or a Loving on Squidoo?

I have to admit that when I first step into Squidoo, I was thinking about making money.

After that, I was thinking about transferring all my notes in my notebook into squidoo lenses and share with everybody.

After that, new ideas kept coming in.

Now, I am just aiming for that giant t-shirt.

However, I just cannot write for the sake of writing. I need to write on something that I am interested in.

I will still continue writing when I get that t-shirt.

Re: Are You Making a Living or a Loving on Squidoo?

I'm with ya Adrienne. I feel like a busker. A penny here, a dime there. A little bit to jingle. I don't expect to make a fortune with my Squidoo lenses, but every month I get something more than if I sat in front of the tube. I'm trying to expand my online endeavors beyond Squidoo, but I'm still creating new lenses. My latest is a family history lens about my great-great-grandfather who had 17 kids. The one before that was about a celebrity I think is interesting and the one before that was about a book I loved as a child.

There is an endless supply of topics for lenses if you look for them. Some will make you a little money, others won't. Some will draw traffic, others won't. ALL will provide you with some fun, creating and maintaining them and you develop some new skills along the way. It's like that with most hobbies. Do something you like and maybe you can develop it into something that makes you a little money. Or just enjoy the hobby for the enjoyment it brings. Some will stick with it and others will move on.

Re: Are You Making a Living or a Loving on Squidoo?

Grannysage,
Its been a while back i ain't even sure if i submitted anything over there.{Why i said maybe  i should look}  I know i signed up,a pal on ebay recomended it. I know i was getting things together to put up!!

Then One day I was cruising around Helium  checking the place out! And came across some really mean words. Feedback or opinion left by one for another.
And i thought that is dang mean. Not sure i wanted to continue exploring!

I mean i don't expect everyone to like my poetry or my way of writting. And don't get me wrong i can take criticism.
But this guy was down right insulting and mean to a man i thought wrote  fairly well, even if not my topic.

I never been back!

Here i been met with nothing but great people and kind words EVEN when i ask a dumb question!!  tongue

No one has ever said Yo Dumb Ars get with it or get off the net!!! LOL That was feeling i got over there!

All i want is a place to bore folks with my stories and regale them with my Poetry!! wink yeah right. wink hehe

Ok to type my way to unknown internet fame!! An ramble!! smile

Re: Are You Making a Living or a Loving on Squidoo?

Squidoo alone pays me enough to pay a couple of bills.  Then there is the affiliate income which helps to pay a couple of more.  The link juice and traffic to my Web sites is a nice perk too.

An unexpected benefit of using Squidoo is that I have been contracted for some copyrighting which paid quite well.  Best of all, my experiences here helped me land a job as an SEO project manager for a local Web development company.

So, using Squidoo can be profitable and can help to open a lot of doors.

Re: Are You Making a Living or a Loving on Squidoo?

For years, I have been trying to understand a lot of stuff that is well explained on Squidoo. I actually GET it. I think Squidoo deserves credit for that. Soldier on, Squid citizens! I like jeffwend's point and Janet21's, that Squidooing has led to other things. When I think of it, that is pretty much how I have gotten many of the jobs, some really good ones, over the years. Not directly, but gradually, through avenues I hadn't even thought of.
Thanks for the boost, folks! smile

Re: Are You Making a Living or a Loving on Squidoo?

Everyone has a different level at what they need to earn to make a living. For some it might be 1000 a month, others need 2000 a month. To earn 1000 a month from lensrank, you will need hundreds of well performing lenses. You have to go after lensrank earnings and affiliate earnings to even get close. I think you have to combine a lot of sources of income from many places to start earning a living online. You need income from blogs, squidoo, cafepress, zazzle, printfection and any other place you can work to earn money! But to earn money from all those sites, you have to put in the hours and do the work! But it can be done!

And it does start off slow, but the great thing though is that once you've built everything, to some capacity it will still bring in money when you're off working on new projects. The beauty of royalties.

Re: Are You Making a Living or a Loving on Squidoo?

Yep, It can be done!

I'm a very busy person but at the end of the day i always have time to write a few sentences just to build one module, a day at a time. Just one lens takes me about a week or two but I'm far from giving up. My slow lens work is paying me every month and i'm happy with that.

Re: Are You Making a Living or a Loving on Squidoo?

Personally, I joined Squidoo because I wanted to write.  It is nice to earn money from my writing, but I am finding that in general, Squidoo is having a positive effect on my life that is worth more than my royalties.  Because of Squidoo:

     -  I have found ideas from other lenses that I have been able to successfully implement in my classroom
     -  I finally joined Facebook and reconnected with friends (including one who is currently living in Asia)
     -  I finally started a blog, which has me being more proactive in my home life
     -  I am saving money because I am no longer shopping out of boredom

And this is just the tip of the iceberg.  Don't get me wrong - I would love to earn my living online so I could stay at home with my family.  These extra "benefits" are making it easier for me to be patient while I build my empire (one lens at a time:)!

I am now officially making enough to keep my website going.  This is a HUGE blessing because we are cutting back in so many ways.  I would never want to  take the site down and am very happy that I found a solution.

Cari_Kay: yeah, that's one goal I had! I'm not trying to make that much money, but having Squidoo pay for my server plus cable (so that my time online pays for the cost of being onine) is great. smile
