*The Forum Rules.
Yep, rules. Read 'em. Abide by 'em. Or your sea creature powers may be revoked. Temporarily, or for good.
1. New to the lounge? Get started here. Learn which category to post your note in, and create a forum signature.
2. Spam: just don't do it. Thou also shalt not fill the forums with multiple threads on the same topic, sockpuppet, or link to irrelevant and non-Squidoo sites (includes signatures).
3. Thou shalt not flame, harass, denigrate, spam, malign, or otherwise finger-point and name-call at ANYONE. This one's a biggy. This too can get you banned.
4. Squidstaff love interacting with smart front-line people, so they stop by the forums from time to time to hear your ideas and share updates. However, this isn't the place to post bugs or solicit admin action. Please send those requests through our feedback link.
5. The SquidU forum is a place for users to interact, to share ideas and inspiration (and yes, gripes... maybe another lensmaster can help) and have fun with their lenses. Try searching for an answer or visiting The Answer Deck.
I've gotten notes from some pretty upset lensmasters today about other lensmasters putting them on big email chains that flood their inboxes.
If you make friends here in the community, and happen to exchange emails with someone in the course of it, it's your responsibility to treat that permission from them to correspond directly as a privilege. And it's their responsibility to let you know if they don't want email from you anymore. But you should ask first.
It's impossible to mediate email conversations, and believe me, I don't want to. In fact, I won't. That's private and between you.
Which is, actually, the point. Don't gather lensmaster emails and start chains with 50 people all on the cc line. Maybe some people wanted to talk just with you, but not with 48 other lensmasters. Maybe they're protective (and most people are) of their email address and inbox.
Yes, feel free to earn a following on Twitter and forums and lenses, and feel free to converse respectfully and freely with your friends on email. You don't need me to tell you that. Just remember to respect people's privacy and attention and time.
If I hear of more lensmasters mass-emailing hundreds of other lensmasters who didn't opt in for that correspondence or relationship, it may become a matter of TOS violation. And no one wants that!
Thanks.

If I may?
It is really easy to email all your friends and protect their privacy, by using the "bcc" line of your email.
That stands for blind cc (in other words, you as the author will see all the emails addresses, but the recipients will only see theirs)
All emails programs should have it somewhere.

Of course you may. ![]()
And that's a good thing to remind people about.
Just make sure, everyone, that your recipients (even bcced people) are happy to be receiving correspondence from you!

The last sentence in your original post is very telling! And a heads up to those who would violate a secret trust. ![]()

Thank you and kudo's to Pretty Bullet! This is an excellent and safe practice to follow! Whether on Squidoo or a private email, I was taught early on to BCC everyone and never divulge an em address for spammers to harvest! You can actually send an email with all the addresses in BCC and nothing in the To: field (try it!) I will send private ems to my family and CC the others just to let them know who got the private em, but never to someone who I do not know or have confidence in that they will exercise common courtesy!

* gasp * absolutely MC, I was assuming they had the email addresses with permission LOL
* waves at John * it does surprise me though how many people still don't know or use that feature. Like you I have always used bcc when doing a mass emailing to a group. But then, being in business I am always very conscious and protective of our customers personal information.
Now, a funny, who here remembers what bcc actually stood for before? meaning, what it was.
For you youngins', in the old days when we made an actual copy of a typed letter, we actually used a sheet of carbon paper to make that copy. Hmmm, I am so dating myself LOL
When we wanted to be sneaky, we would write a letter to person A, we might "cc" on the letter to person B and C, but then we secretly sent a copy to person D and this was not marked anywhere on the letter.
We sure did get a lot of action and surprised recipients that way, imagine the shock of the person who was written to or copied, who blew off the letter to be confronted by the person who was blind copied. LOL

I think I'm at least part-guilty of this occurrence today.
It started with my email to a select group of Squidoo friends asking for a critique of my new candy. One of the members used the reply-all button to warn as many folks as possible about this morning's spam filter bug. (She had good intentions but obviously used a questionable method.) From there it snowballed - other members chimed in, replying to all again...
I've used my personal Squidoo email list only about 3 or 4 times in the last year, and I felt uncomfortable about seeing it distributed this way. The "chain" stopped after a few rounds, so I let it be. After all, we're all friends and the obvious reason for the "high-jacking" of the email list was to warn other members before they would possibly encounter trouble with locked lenses.
However, I was ignorant of the BCC method. Thanks to Kathy, I'm now better educated.
I apologize to everyone who felt upset through the consequences of my ignorance. This shall not ever happen again.
I very much appreciate the personal contact with you, my Squidoo friends. I'll make sure that from now on your private email info shall be safe-guarded. ![]()

I know of one email sent the other day that I know the person who sent it and never felt for a minute that they realized what they were doing. I think problems just came out of it that they may not have been aware of. I can honestly say I am confident that there was no malicious intent by that person.
I probably should have written them back right away to explain about using the bcc feature, but got side tracked.
Maybe it is a good thing this happened so we can further inform people about using the bcc when sending group emails.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people have never heard about BCC and also how many don't understand the need to use it.
You have to consider the wider implications of your email addresses being emailed to a computer that is infected by a virus. Most of these nasty infections harvest addresses from emails and address books, and once your address is harvested, it gets sold and spread around, and you become the target for a ton of junk mail and requests to install viruses on your pc.
Let's be safe out their friends.

Well, let's see....
I received about 11 of those emails about Chef's candy, and 2 from Poddy. Did you reply 2x poddy?
I didn't complain, but really wondered how I could stop the emails from coming every time someone commented and sent the email.
I was thinking I had to go to facebook to look at my settings, and I really didn't want to do that, as the last time I was there I was given a huge trojan that took me a couple of days to get rid of.
I also received 5 emails about the spam filter, funny, I replied to the original email, but didn't see my reply included with the 4 that followed, which were replies to the original. I didn't complain.
Gonna get a new service provider soon, and will lose my email addys for a new ones........I'll be very glad, as I receive around 700 emails a day thru 3 addys. I certainly will be implementing my SeoQuake addon with my new service while I'm online, and not allow anything to 'harvest' my email again, and give me little cookie presents.
Thank you PrettyBullet. I have a friend that uses BBc, and it always shows in the 'email to' list as 'undisclosed'. I wondered how she did that. ![]()

All good, all around.
It was a worthy reminder for the whole group, and no fingers worth pointing!

So its fixed now? Thanks
I just just there was some way that Squidoo could have emailed us about it. Preferrably with one of those "don't respond to this" emails.
Offline
Yup, its definitely fixed, I just published yesterday's lens.

My doubly baaaaaaaad too. Huge mea culpa. I was a bit panicked about my own lenses getting put UNDER REVIEW that I remembered getting Chef's mass e-mail and thought ooooooh what a quick way to get the message out because by the time you check the SquidU forum, you might be too late. But anyhow, realize inappropriate even in times of panic and that the SquidU forum is exactly for that but will continue to correspond one on one with those people that have made a point of reaching out to me individually. Someone did mention that Fluff's toolbar did have an alert feature that made them aware of the issue.
Sorry, chef and for any lensmasters that were bombarded with the barrage of mass replies about the lens spam filter. Decided to post here instead of sending out yet another mass apology e-mail...... ![]()

OK - since we are all putting our hands up - I did just one itty bitty "reply to all" amongst this lot and I am really, really sorry too. It was moi who wanted to get the note out about the alert I received via Fluffs toolbar.
Sorry guys ![]()

The BCC is the first rule we learn when we get our first computer!

The little problem with the lenses and spam filter was all over the forum this morning - five threads and possibly more
The facebook warnings came much later

It's so great to see all of us involved in this "boo-boo of passion" come forward to make this a community learning experience.

I learned a few years ago when I started emailing a list of people for business that the reply to all is not a button to be pushed. If you send out to any group of acquaintances for business you should definitely used the BCC feature. If they want each other's addresses, they will ask each other. ![]()
It's hard NOT to love you, chef!

I wasn't upset about the e-mails, and appreciated a heads up about new candy (mmmmm) and the locked lens issue. All good intentions.
The cc and 'reply to all' issues became a problem for me when a high school friend did mass mailings in that fashion. Old boyfriends came out of the woodwork, and it became very awkward. Also, when I was on a home owners association board, the president accidentally broadcasted some unfavorable stuff about another board member via our 'private' e-mail list. Lawsuits were threatened, etc. I've never used 'reply to all' since.

I must be getting old because I know that bcc stands for "blind carbon copy" from the old typewriter days. LOL Yahoo makes me put in at least 1 TO address so I have to put in my own or everyone gets to see the TO address. This works fine, except one person said to me, "I got your email but it was addressed to you. Isn't that weird?" LOL Anyone have any suggestions to eliminate that?
