*The Forum Rules.
Yep, rules. Read 'em. Abide by 'em. Or your sea creature powers may be revoked. Temporarily, or for good.
1. New to the lounge? Get started here. Learn which category to post your note in, and create a forum signature.
2. Spam: just don't do it. Thou also shalt not fill the forums with multiple threads on the same topic or sockpuppet.
3. Thou shalt not flame, harass, denigrate, spam, malign, or otherwise finger-point and name-call at ANYONE. This one's a biggy. This too can get you banned.
4. Squidstaff love interacting with smart front-line people, so they stop by the forums from time to time to hear your ideas and share updates. However, this isn't the place to post bugs or solicit admin action. Please send those requests through our feedback link.
5. The SquidU forum is a place for users to interact, to share ideas and inspiration (and yes, gripes... maybe another lensmaster can help) and have fun with their lenses. Try searching for an answer or visiting The Answer Deck.
The Yahoo! News RSS feed is the best kept secret so far for Squidoo's RSS module. The feed looks amazing when translated, as opposed to Google News which looks absolutely terrible. The articles don't double up, and the 100 word excerpts look like you painstakingly wrote them yourself.
The best part is yet to come - the feeds are completely customizable. You can create an RSS feed, which is fully compatible with Squidoo, simply by typing in your desired keywords. Be sure to visit the feed customization page and bookmark it immediately (scroll down to get to the form): http://news.yahoo.com/rss
I am currently using it on my Sopranos, Chris Farley and Dave Chappelle lenses if you'd like to see some examples. Happy RSSing!

Remember tho'
"What are the terms of use?
The feeds are provided free of charge for use by individuals and non-profit organizations for personal, non-commercial uses. We ask that you provide attribution to Yahoo! News in connection with your use of the feeds.
If you provide this attribution in text, please use: "Yahoo! News." If you provide this attribution with a graphic, please use the Yahoo! News logo that we have included in the feed itself.
We reserve all rights in and to the Yahoo! News logo, and your right to use the Yahoo! News logo is limited to providing attribution in connection with these RSS feeds.
We are also including the provider of each individual news story in the feed alongside each headline. Please do not alter this for display. We want our news partners to be attributed for their work.
Yahoo! News also reserves the right to require you to cease distributing these feeds at any time for any reason.

Put "From Yahoo! News" in the module subtitle then, and pray that their undercover agents don't break in your door. ![]()

Hi Dave
Here is another source
"Google News search results feeds: You can also get a feed for any search you do on Google News. First do any search on Google News, then simply use the Atom or RSS link on the left-hand side of your search results page to generate the feed.
Customized news feeds: You can create a feed of a customized news page (note: for now, this applies only to English language sections), simply by creating a customized news page, and then using the Atom or RSS link on the left-hand side of the page to generate the feed."
Same terms

So does that mean that we can Google ourselves and generate an RSS feed about everything on the web about or by ourselves?

Here are my two favorite RSS feed tricks.
Del.icio.us - first, each tag produces a feed, second, each tag under your account produces a feed. I use my 'custom' del.icio.us feed all the time. For instance, my feed for Adirondack News comes from http://del.icio.us/yubondow/adknews - this feed can be instantly used to show articles I feel are on topic. Also, by tagging these items, it helps proliferate it in the various networks. Take it a step further with the link rolls feature and you can have custom content anywhere on your website. To use simply tag a page, article, or site and it appears in that tag's feed. Plus!! You can custom name and include descriptions of anything you tagand you can delete items. Don't forget the Firefox extension. Too cool. (I feel a bit naked showing my del.icio.us, yikes)
FeedDigest - Collect your feed and output it in five ways: HTML, JavaScript, RSS, Atom, WML/WAP. Most powerful, you can aggregate feeds and make it into one custom feed. Best feature is the ability to convert the feed into the various formats to use or distribute.
With these tools you can easily display exactly what you want, when you want, and where you want it. You are in control of the content.
I can see the concern about the Yahoo News and attribution. Using Del.icio.us, and to a certain extent FeedDigest, you are the one selecting items so I guess that's fair game. I say Yahoo should be responsible for itself. It is easy enough to add "from Yahoo News" to the end of each item or something. Yahoo should be glad someone finds their feed worthy of display. Most of the time I find news feeds, depending on the search term, are either too broad or doesn't capture enough.

Convenient that the dashboard Squid U ad for today pointed here, since Feed43 is experiencing severe server overload. I've built a lot of "custom" feeds using their free service. (Contrary to the public perception, Amazon associates make so little money that "paid" services have to be considered very carefully in order to stay "in the black.")
Anyway, feeds are popping up all over Squidoo alluding to "Paid Service" They're talking about ME paying (which I've done) -- NOT end-users / visitors. Everything should be back to normal Tuesday or Wednesday.
Meanwhile, I'm putting some finishing touches on Lensmaster Index: The Editors of Rolling Stone Magazine. I must have "hit a nerve" with this one, because I've never had a lens climb so fast in the lensrank lottery! Right now it's #2 in The Music Group and still climbing!
Captain Squid!
