Do you rate every lens you visit?

Usually I just rate the lens I think deserve 5 stars. If it doesn't, I just don't rate at all because I would feel bad giving someone less than five.

What about you guys?

Re: Do you rate every lens you visit?

I give most lenses I visit 4 stars - only the really great ones get 5 from me.

Lenses that I feel are below average will get no stars.

I use all the stars depending on the lens quality.  If I really don't like a lens, I don't rate it at all.

I rate every lens I visit, unless I wish to give it zero support, then I don't.

And I do use the full variety of ratings.  To not makes your ratings pointless.

Re: Do you rate every lens you visit?

I have punished spammy lenses with a 1, but mostly I only give 5s or nothing... like most people seem to do. I try only to comment if I have something relevant and halfway intelligent to say.

I used to give 3s, 4s or 5s... but the 'culture' here doesn't seem to work the way.  So I stopped.

Wrong.

You REWARDED them with a 1.

Report spam lenses, don't give them a rating!  Rating a lens, EVEN WITH A 1, says, "this lens was WORTH RATING."

I never give anyone less than a five.  If it doesn't deserve a five, I don't rate it.

Re: Do you rate every lens you visit?

I probably don't rate enough lenses, but I'm trying to improve. I'll usually give 5 stars if I've gotten all the way through a lens. I'll sometimes give fewer stars if the subject is interesting but not quite up to what I'd like to see.

Re: Do you rate every lens you visit?

I use all ratings from 1 to 5, but don't always rate all lenses I visit. Sometimes I just have no idea about the topic so I refrain from rating.

I also 1* people who exchange 5* ratings just to tick them off.

So now people are pointless because of a rating system? Imo that sounds worse than your first comment...

Every 5 star that I get is encouraging to me and that is why I like to give the same encouragement to others.  I do not consider me or my ratings pointless.

Then let's do away with 0-5 stars altogether and just have a "click here if you want to show support" and have it be a simple counter.

Either click it or don't.

That's exactly what you do when you rate with only 5 stars or don't rate at all.

Re: Do you rate every lens you visit?

It's like a pat on the back and that is what I am saying with my giving a 5 star.  I don't give any stars if there are default titles used or incomplete bio.  Who am I to judge on content?  I read and try to learn something new but that doesn't mean that I always understand or agree with what I read.  If the content is presented well, I try to give a pat on the back.  This is just the way I feel and I realize that there are different views on the subject.  I just like the idea that we encourage each other in a positive way.

Re: Do you rate every lens you visit?

I'm one of those "pointless" all-or-nothing raters. smile  To me, it makes sense to support what I like with a full star blast.

In my mind, it seems to have more impact when trying to lift up the "good" and leave behind the "lame". I'm usually unclear on what distinguishes a 4-star lens from a 3-star lens.

But I'm also the first one to admit that my mind is a good thing to waste.  lol

I WANT to rate all the lenses I see.  Often I forget to do so, though.  Trying to get into the habit.....Maybe it would help of there was a duplicate set of stars at the end of a lens so one doesn't have to goo all...the....way.....back top!hahahah

Re: Do you rate every lens you visit?

I give the 5-star to those lenses I like, although I have given 4, and even 3 to some. If I don't think a lens deserves even a 3-star rating I don't bother rating it. I might go back later and give it a rating.

Mostly I give five stars if I feel its good.  If there is even one default module, its automatically 4 stars.  There have been times that I have given 3 or less but its not to often.

Re: Do you rate every lens you visit?

My opinion is such:

Why have a 1-5 rating system at all if you're only going to score fives? It seems utterly pointless to me.

But I have stopped giving 1 stars. If it's that bad, I don't want to reward it with a star at all. Any star rating is beneficial to your lens (albeit a 1,2,3, or 4 star rating makes many lensmasters upset).

I don't rate every lens I visit, but I do rate a lot of lenses.  My profile says I have rated 1,846 lenses!  Wowza. smile  I use all of the stars available not just the 5 star rating.

Re: Do you rate every lens you visit?

I use all five ratings, but because I am very selective as far as the lenses I decide to visit, I rate heavy on the upper end more so than the lighter end.  smile

Re: Do you rate every lens you visit?

What I often wonder is if I get less than 5 stars, what it would have taken to make it a 5 in the eyes of the visitor.

I have sometimes given less than 5 stars and then gone back and increased the rating if the lensmaster has made changes that have in my view improved the lens.

If I dont like the content of the lens, I may still give a 5 if I think the lens is put together very well. If it is a lens that I consider to be a total waste of time visiting then I dont rate it - even 1 star is more of a reward than no stars. If it is pure Spam, then I will report it.

Re: Do you rate every lens you visit?

My thoughts:

- The average rating that a lens has does not really matter - it's how many stars it has that counts. A lens with 100 x 4 stars is rated higher than one with only 1 x 5 star rating. This is also why a 1 star rating is worth more than no rating at all.

- People who rate 'all or nothing' are therefore valuable (assuming that they only give them out to lenses that deserve them).

- A simple thumbs up/down system would probably work better...

Re: Do you rate every lens you visit?

I rate most of the lenses I read.

I try to rate one for everyone who has commented or fanned me.  If I can't give those a 5 I don't rate at all.  However, if I come upon one on my own, I will give fives if I can at all, if they have one default, I let them know personally but don't rank at all, if there are several defaults or really not much content at all, I will give a 4, 3 or occasionally 2.

When I find a spam  master, someone who has been here a short time, has over a hundred lenses that all look alike and doesn't rank anyone else, or participate at all, then I give 1's.

If I find one in the critic me forum, and it is bad, I don't rank, as I don't think that would be fair since the person is asking for help.  I give them the help, but no ranking.
