Scammbuster to the rescue!!!

Hey, "Scammbuster", I love your lens that exposes lensmasters who are allegedly abusing the Squidoo system by artificially inflating their lensrank and star ratings so they can promote their various marketing efforts in the Top 100.   For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, check it out here:

http://www.squidoo.com/onestarbandits

But I have a question......You've exposed the alledged scammers, so now what?  Does it do any good for people to visit those sites and give them a one-star rating, or does the increased traffic and votes (even if its only one star) just do more good for them than harm?  Someone with a little more knowledge of the Squidoo lensrank algorithm than me care to comment?

Re: Scammbuster to the rescue!!!

The nifty thing is that when someone looks at their pages chances are high my lens will show up in the search as well smile i'm using their tags smile

Ignoring them totally or one star bombing their lenses can both be a good remedy smile Together we can rid squidoo of these villains.

I added some new ones... Gary has to be the best of 'em yet. Thnx aj

Re: Scammbuster to the rescue!!!

It seems to be working. Zlist finally lost number one status and the Wine Library has left the top ten list. The bagillion Videosense lenses all have dropped as well. Keep up the good work Squids! Go out there, strictly rate for content and prove once more that SQUIDOO actually stands for Super Quality U and I DO.

WE STILL HAVE A LOOONG WAY AHEAD OF US BUT WE SHALL PREVAIL!

Never rest... evil will always be lurking below the surface of the vast internet ocean.

Congratulations!

Did you happen to notice that the star ranking on your  OWN lens is 67974?
I'm wondering why your lensrank is disabled?   Have you asked that it be so?

Re: Scammbuster to the rescue!!!

Still making progress....

Kc. admitted to making the tellman lens. I have been accused of being part of the schemes .. really lively.. :p

I added a nice poll. Already the people doing the schemes have been flagging me and voting things down like mad. No need to vote just look at the way they go about it smile it's hilarious. Plexo votes even go down to minus 7 :p

You'd expect to see at least some correlation to the number of thumbs ups for the lens, yet there is none. Why? because real squids can only vote once (maybe twice) because they don't have 20 accounts.

It proves once more that scammers can only click vote buttons.

Re: Scammbuster to the rescue!!!

I voted myself up on the list. Like I said from the start, I think that it was a great idea.

By the way Arend-Jan(scambuster) and I are not in league with eachother to get views, traffic, and whatever.

This is just to great of a controversy to be planned out.

Re: Scammbuster to the rescue!!!

I'm not in league with anybody to be honest. Of course people are always too willing to claim a bit of attention to themselves or try to profit from the action. It's painstakingly hard these days to get attention on the internet for good content. It's like a huge mailbox filled with a million free coupons for penis enlargments and boobjobs. How on earth are we supposed to find that one card from a loved one in there?

Most squids are tired of the scams and have been for a long long time. We are the ones partly responsible for the succes of squidoo.

Actually it's funny as well as sad to see how people still fall for things like piramidscams. Do as I do and become rich overnight. Don't forget to refer to me. Pathetic. Taking a glance at some of the features Tellman offers for example are downright scandalous. If you ever wonder why your mailboxes are always overcrowded with spam just take a quick look at listhero.com. Try to sign up :p First thing he needs is 3 email adresses from your friends so the snowball can get rolling. Then he repeatedly asks you to upgrade your account or "else you won't be on top of the listhero-list". You people have actually no clue as how to these scams work.

Luckily it's only a matter of time before the law forbids these practices.

Re: Scammbuster to the rescue!!!

What is the Scammbuster Manifesto?

What is allowed in the eyes of The Scammbuster?

I see the screenshot of WineLibraryTV asking members of his forum to vote up his lens, but is that wrong?

My first reaction is probably the same as yours "You bastard!!!". Why? Because I don't have an army of willing servants to call on to help improve my Squidoo score.

But is it that much different then swapping links for your blog if you're a member of a webmasters forum?

If they were asking their members to come and "one star bomb" other people who they don't like then I'd find that... woaaaaah, that's what you're doing.

In the grand scheme of things how important is being ranked in the Squidoo Top 100?

If that's all these people are after then they have very shallow lives. Either that or lives which are easily contented.

I've been in the Top 100 twice. Both for brief amounts of time, and not much further then the low 90's. One for a lens I bought and the other which I made myself. My life didn't change at all. I didn't acquire any special powers.

If being a caped crusader and keeping the bastards honest is your thing, then so be it. Though it would be a shame if you accidently pointed the figner or nailed someone who is not guilty of being corrupt. I'm sure you do your homework but be cautious of what you use as a standard to measure up what is right and wrong and good and bad.

Re: Scammbuster to the rescue!!!

N376, allow me to answer that, at  least for  myself.  I have been repeatedly, daily, relentlessly  one starred by these people.  Notice my  David lens, if you've even yet looked at  it.  That such a lens holds such a low ranking compared to many of the others above  it is shocking.  Thank goodness that the most important lenses I have don't need top ranking to be effective.   Not that they were spared, no, as I said, every  single lens, published or not, has been repeatedly one starred over and over for days and days.  It isn't possible for this to be only one person.  And why  have I  been  so blessed?  Because my really awesome lenses pose a continuous threat to their top lensrank spots.  I  worked incredibly hard on the David lens, and I'm proud of it, and it is a threat to these people.  They NEED top rankings more than I do.    No one of good intentions cares that laptop bags is higher in lensrank than the  David.  She deserves her lensrank because she hit on something  people like.  She came by it honestly and NOT AT OTHER PEOPLE'S EXPENSE.

So, thanks to inaction or what, apathy?  the lensranking lists have been completely discredited, so has lens of the day and all the  other fine little opportunities to celebrate what squidoo is and could be, all at the expense of the best lensmasters.  My David lens, and the other really good lenses I've built only benefit the scammers, and squidoo, not me, because while I get nothing but the attention of the 1 star scammers, the scammers and Squidoo get the credibility that my David lens and others bring to the party.

On top of all that, now the identity of the scammbuster, who was the only one to help us, has been publicly revealed here in  the forum, which COULD ONLY HAPPEN BY SOMEONE WHO WORKS AT SQUIDOO.  Couldn't be just coincidence, could it?

This person is even happy  to put this man's reputation, and everything else he has, at serious and personal risk of retaliation, all in the interest of keeping this crap going and the 1 star scammers getting their way.  Gives you an idea of the intensity of their greed, doesn't it?  Where is the justice?  Lewis?  MrLewisSmile, anything???  Anything at all???

Re: Scammbuster to the rescue!!!

Margaret_Schaut, it's a shame. But in the grand scheme of things wouldn't outside traffic and a high ranking on a Google search be far more beneficial than a Lensrank?

Don't make the S in SEO stand for "squid". Think bigger than a lensrank. If you were to sit on the front page of a Google search for a nice keyword you'd have plenty of traffic, exposure and credibility that no amount of corrupt dealings of a few black hat Squids would be able to derail.

In the short term it sucks, but quality traffic from a steady source will wash away the stains.

Re: Scammbuster to the rescue!!!

Maybe a Manifesto would be fun. I really don't care about my identity being exposed. It kind of was a shame to find out that Lewis just used his privileges to compare IP adresses. After his initial Cool! comment on the Lens he even asked me to delete it and post something in his wordings on the squidu site. sad

I go about it very carefully and spend a lot of time surfing other communities to see what some people are up to. A nice example that has helped me identify some people was a discussion on www.warriorforum.com (just search the forums for squidoo) mostly hailing the "viral" effects of the recently introduced Plexo modules. Then there are also people explaining on how to abuse RSS feeds. The general tone on Warriorforums is that Squidoo is a poor thing in itself but it has some nice features that can be used for their own purposes. They don't seem to realise that the reason why Squidoo has been doing so well on Google is mainly because of dedication of long time members and the high content value.

It's not so hard to figure out that they have also been voting lenses like the David Lens down a lot. Maybe not all of them did... but a lot did nonetheless. A lot of contentless groups have been created and it also helps a lot to figure out who are involved.

The latest development has been a "contest" about the word Affiliate Marketing as the first tag. http://socialmarketing101.com/blog/

It's basically to see who's lens is highest after 30 days. Too bad i couldn't
sign up ... but  I did change my basic tag to "affiliate marketing" to accomodate them. It's weird to have people compete in a contest about affiliate marketing while they say on other forums that the affiliate marketing bad on squidoo, no moneymaker and a waste of time.

ah well.. as you all see i'm still busy smile

Re: Scammbuster to the rescue!!!

N376, yes that's correct and thank goodness my most  important lenses care nothing at all about the squidoo lensrank.  most of those have first page google ranking anyway.

But using David as an example again, I worked like  a dog for  weeks to get all the research done for that lens, pictures I could  use, plus just  assembling it all in an intelligent way.  Though not a hugely high maintenance lens, I do have to go every so often and make sure my links are all still good and  I haven't lost any  videos.  And for what???  It doesn't especially drive traffic to my other lenses, and people who are looking at Amish stuff and information don't necessarily care about the David.

So far what the David has accomplished  is this:

1. it has added value to Squidoo because it needed content, not just kitsch.  I had originally felt the danger for squidoo was becoming a huge morass of  teenage angst and garishness, like myspace.

2. it has made me and all my lenses a particular  target of scammers who want  the high spots for their get rich quick schemes, plus if they can one star me down just far enough, they get to impress their potential clients that they're 'better and more popular' than the David. (Or my  corvette lens,  too, by the way which  is #1 on google)   Wowie!  Now it is clear that the real danger for squidoo is being inundated by so many ineffective mlm'ers and internet guru scammers that we'll all be buried in them.

So, all that benefit for an income of $1.88 or thereabouts.

I really have to evaluate where I'm going to devote my energies, and what I'm going to do with  the David.  I'm not considering deleting it, at least as yet.  But the option is on  the table.    All this mess has taken  a LOT of  time away from the rest of my lenses that don't need or care about a lensrank position.   I have no desire to add credibility to people who don't deserve it.  I have  loads of lenses that  need my attention and I just haven't been able to give it lately. NO MORE.

You may have a problem with Kitsch!, Margaret, but it's actually a pretty successful lens.

I find it more interesting that it would appear the Citizen Squids don't seem to have very much in the way of ethical work guidelines from Squidoo.  That little IP address trick of Lewis's would have resulted in being made redundant at many companies I've worked for in the past whether he was dealing with a problem user or not.

Well still it's kind of lame to send the word around to others. But like I said before... I don't really care. My lenses have all been recently one starred over and over again so often that either i was to lose interest in squidoo altogether or start some countering measures.

Btw.. people dont vote for my lens so often.. i don't need it in the top 10 or anything.. i just need it to be ahead of the ones ruining Squidoo.

i've requested that headquarters disable my rankings so none of my lenses appear in  the top hundred list.  the most important ones (to  me) don't need it, the other ones like the David only benefit the scammers.  Let's see what happens when the top hundred list is flooded with irrelevancy and scammers.

Re: Scammbuster to the rescue!!!

ScammBuster, I really don't see where this is coming from. Even Squidoo touted the "viral" effects of Plexo modules - why is it evil when someone from WF talks abuot it? And what abuse is being directed about the RSS feeds? I have only ever told people how to do a Yahoo feed on their topic or niche and or how to create one from your own blog.

No one that I know of has ever claimed Squidoo was a poor thing - to the contrary! Everyone is excited about it and people are creating all sorts of lenses, not just commercial ones.

In fact, I explain clearly that Write modules are best - and to create valuable content and courses so that other Squidooers continue coming to your lens.

You seem like you have a sour attitude with marketers in general and this is a shame. I have never seen a bad attitude on Squidoo for a long time until that guy went around rating lenses a 1 and now this...it was such a friendly atmosphere...
