2. Spam: just don't do it. Thou also shalt not fill the forums with multiple threads on the same topic, sockpuppet, or link to irrelevant and non-Squidoo sites (includes signatures).
3. Thou shalt not flame, harass, denigrate, spam, malign, or otherwise finger-point and name-call at ANYONE. This one's a biggy. This too can get you banned.

Get more visitors to your lenses

Use PHRASES as tags as well as single words.

Squidoo lenses rank really highly in google, often #1 for non-competitive search terms, and tags help your lens come up for SPECIFIC search terms.

What might a person new to your subject search for? Might they type a QUESTION into google?

For example, someone might type: is rich dad poor dad worth reading? If you had this as a tag on your rich dad door dad book lens then you would probably come up quite high!

Do you have a lens about camera memory cards? Maybe this would be a good tag: what memory cards work with cameraX.  Not everybody is going to search google for that, but those who do will probably find you.

Will anyone in your target audience type a QUESTION into google? What might they type? Think of some examples, and add them as tags!

Do you think this is a helpful idea? Do you do it already?

EDIT: Loads more tagging tricks are at my Tagging Tricks lens.

Also, SquidooCool.com is my blog covering everything you need to know about making lenses. For Free!

Re: Get more visitors to your lenses

Good idea, but will Google or Squidoo punish us if we go overly tag crazy?

Re: Get more visitors to your lenses

When you put a tag in one of the tag boxes it shows up as a meta tag in the source code.

Squidoo creates a whole new page for that tag on it's server. I think it is something like www.squidoo.com/tags/rich+dad+poor+dad

From what I understand, google doesn't much care about meta tags, and adding some phrases will create highly ranked tags pages to your lens. Don't go into hundreds but do try it!

Anyone else using this notice more traffic after implementing this?

Ps, search google for your tag-phrases. Put a cushion on the floor next to your chair before you do. Incase you fall of.

Yes, keyword phrases and focused single keywords are the only way to tag.

Re: Get more visitors to your lenses

A couple other similar ideas:

1. Use common misspellings and typos.
2. Make different combinations of the same or similar phrases -- such as "travel New York," "travel in New York," and "New York travel."

Re: Get more visitors to your lenses

P.S. Also, check out your competition, and use tags slightly different. If your rivals commonly use "hotels in Raleigh," you might try "hotels in the Raleigh area."

Re: Get more visitors to your lenses

Good idea Maureen,

Another idea:

There is a thing in the google labs that might be a useful tool for some people. As you type something into the google search box a drop down box appears telling you how many search results there are for that term. It shows them all as you go.

I can't really explain it well. Just check it out. Type in stuff and you'll see what I mean:

Re: Get more visitors to your lenses

curious to see all your results over time. anyone want to make a Tagging Tricks lens that we can feature on SquidU?

also, soon we plan to limit the # of tags allowed, just to avoid tag spam on lenses.

but this shouldn't affect you guys. only people going overboard.

Re: Get more visitors to your lenses

I implemented your thoughts here on a lens 5 days ago, as well as some other thoughts that I read in various forums.  I wanted to post here that a combination of tag phrases, blogging, and listing on other sites seems to have helped.  My lens moved from the 300's up in rank each day(2 days ago to the highest ever in the low 200's), and today made it to #71.  I know that not just one thing is responsible, but I did want to tell you that I've seen increased traffic over 5 days on the 3 lenses I've tried this on.  I hope that it keeps on increasing and working, because not only has traffic increased but so has the $ pending.  smile  THANKS!!!

Re: Get more visitors to your lenses

Hi, RV,

I just checked your lens about pin trading - it's very good and I gave you five stars.

Congratulations on getting such great results by using a combination of tags, blogging and link exchange.

However, the experts say, that if you change all of those elements at the same time, it's hard to say which of them contribute most and which one needs refinement. Usually, one element at time is tested. But, hey, it's not a lab test, so enjoy the good results and expect even better to come!

Could you, though, share wit us at least one example of what you're doing - of course without revealing your "trade secrets" - and an example of the results?

Congrats on those $ pending...

Re: Get more visitors to your lenses

got it.  I actually hadn't played with that much, but I see what you mean.  it gives a good idea of what other tags can be added just by looking at what variations come up, and there were several that I hadn't even thought of(simple as they were!).
thanks for reposting that thought!

Re: Get more visitors to your lenses

Hi all,

Google Suggest is cool and can be useful, but nothing beats the power of the Google Keyword Tool (also known as the sandbox).

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Type your main keywords into the Keyword Variations box, each keyword on a new line, add as many as you want/can think of, and make sure that "Use synonyms" is checked, then hit "Get More Keyword" and there you have it, a huge list of alternatives many of which you may not have heard of. You can sort by how commonly the keywords are searched.

Another trick is to use the ~ for searching off of the main Google search. For example do this search "~cats" without the quotes, and you'll see the words Google considers synonyms in bold. You may have to check a few pages of the results to see all the synonyms. For example, pets, and kittens. These are considered (on a lexical level) words that mean the same thing as cats, and that should appear along with cats or in place of cats. Use of them will help boost your overall keyword theme.

Hope that wasn't too technical. wink

Cheers,
Chris

Re: Get more visitors to your lenses

Update:  My lens has now climbed to #26. Here are the things that I've done.  Posted to my blog, used Technorati, google suggest, lens tag tricks, and asked for placement on group pages.
It has worked for my lens so far.  I've also asked friends and family to view my work since I'm proud of it.  Several of them haven given me good suggestions and other suggestions have come from strangers.  I'm just looking for a way to help people enjoy the Magic of Disney even more when they visit a park!
