Hot news from ebay - They are opening their own affiliate program, ditching CJ & others. Their own program opens on 1st april, with the others closing on the 30th april.
This will impact a lot of people who have been relying on ebay affiliate earnings. especially those that do so from a lot of different links!
Meanwhile I'm just hoping they can provide a RSS affiliate feed as they do presently, and the migration doesn't prove to much of a problem for squidoo!
Here's the text of the email I got, is it some weird april fool joke do you think?
"We are excited to announce eBay’s new global affiliate platform: the eBay Partner Network.
The new platform will go live on April 1st, 2008 PST, at which point eBay will no longer be running its affiliate program through Commission Junction. Beginning April 1st, affiliates should register with eBay Partner Network and migrate their links from CJ to the new platform.
While CJ and ValueClick have been valuable partners to eBay throughout the years, we’ve decided to give our affiliate community a customized experience for eBay affiliates.
All the great tools and benefits of working with the eBay program will remain the same – access to the Editor Kit and affiliate API, the flexible destination tool, the great payout structure. In addition, the eBay partner network will provide several new features:
• Easy global registration to multiple countries simultaneously
• New, targeted banners and rich media creatives
• New landing page optimization and geo-targeting capabilities
• More detailed reporting capabilities for eBay’s programs
The eBay Partner Network and Commission Junction will run in parallel for one month through this process, so please plan to complete your migration by May 1st, 2008.
You can receive an additional 5% bonus for all traffic tracked through eBay Partner Network in April 2008 (bonus applicable to traffic sent to Half.com and US, UK, Australia, Canada, Italy, India and Spain eBay sites). The sooner you migrate, the more you’ll earn! Just:
• Register with eBay Partner Network on April 1, 2008
• Confirm your registration, and obtain your new identifiers
• Update your links with your new identifiers.
• Reminder: Please plan to complete migration by May 1, 2008.
You will receive more information and step by step directions for the transition on April 1st. A special help desk to answer your questions about migration will also be available starting April 1st. You can find more details, including a list of programs that will be affected, at http://affiliates.ebay.com.
Thanks for being a valued partner. We’re excited for a successful transition, and the opportunity to grow your business through even more innovations, information and communication moving forward!"

My My!
Isn't that interesting! Looks like those that have bragged about how much they've earned with Ebay and CJ with either questionable or other means are going to be shot out of the water.
Gods Love and mine,

Oh wow! Thanks for the heads up, very interesting!

I'm just hoping that you will still be able to use their program to put affiliate tracking into RSS feeds!
I can imagine April will be a very busy month for anyone earning a good income from ebay affiliate sales whilst they change and update their links.
Meanwhile, I'll update my tutorial as soon as ebay open their program and I work out how to do it myself! ![]()

I'm sure you'll figure it out Book Garden
I gots faith in ya!
And when you do, it will be awesome for all of us, as you offer it free, with no coding to take a percentage of our commission!

We've been working with them for a few weeks in order to make sure our links are structured properly for the new format.

Awesome that you're right on this Gil, hopefully that'll make the transition seamless for the eBay modules...
I'm not looking forward to manually editing 200 lenses with links - but what must be done must be done, eBay has a good payout and I wouldn't want to give that up. I'll continue to use CJ because I've got some awesome relationships with other companies working for me...
The letter Book posted is also on eBay's website: http://affiliates.ebay.com/NS/Blog.htm
So no April Fool Joke..

That's awesome Gil,
With Squidoo's links and Book Garden's RSS, we'll be 'good to go'! ![]()

Book, that's a very well-written walk-through on the process of setting up the RSS feeds. 5*'s for sure, and I'll be sharing it with my students.
I was wondering, have you figured out a way to include SID's in your RSS feeds yet?
Converting over from CJ to the new program will probably be a little time consuming, but the underlying success will surely still be there and still be profitable for all who choose to use it. Unless eBay messes it up *knockonwood*

Nope, the only way of tracking performance of links is to create a different PID for each, which is a little time consuming.
Loyaliss currently has a program that you can buy that will add SID's or you can use his free trial version and surrender 2 out of 5 clicks to his PID/SID. I imagine he will be adapting and adopting this process in April if it is possible, or he's likely to be be having some customers requesting refunds!
Other than that I don't have a clue as to incorporating an SID into the tracking. Perhaps wwith the new tools ebay will be making available this will become available easily. Guess we just wait and see!
Great news to know that Squidoo is in the loop on this and Gil is on the ball (that guy deserves a holiday!)

Yeah tell me about it - I just finished going through and setting up close to 200 PIDs in CJ for my lenses...
Now I'll get to do it all over again with eBay's new program - yippie NOT! *LOL* But you know exactly what I'm feeling in the frustration department related to that I'm sure!
Yeah, I know about loyalis' tool. I'm frugal/cheap and would rather do it myself than pay for someone else to do it - I was just hoping someone else who obviously has a clue had figured out the trick ![]()
Looks like it'll be another PID creating marathon for me in April!

Just wanted to throw a few updates out there..
1) I Designed my Ebay RSS tool so that if eBay changed their structure, I could change it once on my end and automatically update all the feeds out there. I think I have close to 1000 feeds in one form or another out there on my own pages using that tool and there was no way I was going to go back and edit the URLs of every single feed. Whenever eBay releases more guidance on how the new feeds will be set up, I'll let everyone know more but I'm not anticipating any problems.
2) I don't foresee any problems with keeping SID tracking embedded in the tool either, which is sweet
.
3) Yes, there is a free version where 2 of the 5 links are randomly embedded with my CJ account number each time the feed loads. I thought this was fair as it is comparable to fluffanutta's amazon tool (I think his might be 1 in 5) and is less than Squidoo's 50%. Coding the feed took me several long days to get right ( and it looks like it will take a few more in April
) . If anyone feels that this is not fair for a free tool, please let me know what you think would be a fair amount. For comparison, the paid for version of the RSS feed I offer has up to 50 listings (instead of 5) and doesn't have any 'freebie links' embedded in it.
4) Book, As I build the feed I'll be more than happy to let you know if I come up with an easy way to add SID codes without having to hard code them into the feeds.
5) no CJ middleman will hopefully mean higher incentives and commission rates
woot!

Thanks for the update Loyalis, it's a shame ebay are letting everyone play with the new toys before the launch so we can figure out how it works. I guess Gil & Squidoo got an invite to test them out due to the volume of traffic sent by squidoo and commission earned, which is good for squidoo, though I'm sure that he's got enough to play with already with the recent updates and tweaks to squidoo.

Hopefully, adding SID's to RSS feeds will be easier under the new system and you'll be able to add these when adding the PID, but I guess we wait and see! Thanks also for the offer of passing on info, it's appreciated, I guess we'll just have to see on the 1st April!

I've just posted some info on using Feedburner to manage your RSS feeds - the advantage of doing this is that you can then manage ALL feeds from one page in feedburner. This is a great way of managing your feeds as you won't have to go into edit mode for each lens/modules you have a feed after setting up your intial feed. You can name each feed as you 'burn' it and this will give you an easy method of updating feeds in future.
There is also stats reporting available on feedburner, though as yet I'm not sure whether they only show stats for those subscribing to the feed.
Just thought this was worth adding for those who want to play with RSS feeds but are twiddling their thumbs until the Ebay Partner Network is launched.

I was trying to add a feed the other day and was in the 'advanced search' so I could add the affiliate PID, but it was refusing point blank to display the 'affiliate tracking information' dropdown or even admit that was an option.
At the point of tearing out what hair I have left
I suddenly noticed a little message at the top of the screen saying something along the lines of 'you are trying out eBays new search would you like to revert to the traditional screen' and of course when I did the affiiate tracking option reappeared.
So my guess based on this is that the ability to add affiliate tracking is going to be removed from the normal ebay search and will be handled from within the new affiliate area.
But I could be barking up the wrong tree ![]()
Incidentally, if anybody manages to find a way to display the affiliate tracking information using the 'new search experience' please be kind enough to share because I couldn't find it anywhere ![]()

Wow, this changes things. At least 1 page of mine will need to be updated.
It's probably better they're getting their own Affiliate program though. Some people have a hard time getting approved for CommissionJunction, so this will still keep eBay open to them as an affiliate.

Yikes! That is going to be a big changeover - thanks for giving us the heads up, I hadn't gotten that email. Now I have to think of a plan on the best way to change the 30,000+ links on my sites. Thank goodness for "find and replace" ![]()
Now if only I can remember where I put all those links...

Well, I've signed up for the ebay partner network which was simple and took all of 5 minutes!
The exicitng news is that when creating ebay rss feeds you can now add individual tracking easily!!
The bad news is that the feeds aren't live yet, though it has been possible to update my tutorial to show how to create the feeds!
Did I mention you can now easily add your own tracking to each feed???
Offline
Groovy! The RSS feeds as served by ebay are now live! I was expecting this to take a few days seeing as it wasn't working straight away!
Thanks to fanfreluche for letting me know the rss was now live! ![]()
Have fun updating your feeds, and check out my tip for using feedburner to manage them!

Adding RSS feeds all sounds a bit complicated to me. Guess I`ll have to read up some more on your lens dealing with that subject, T_B_G. ![]()

It's seven simple steps, surely if you followed each one of them slowly you could pick it up easily! If not let me know how I can make the instructions simpler! ![]()

Book - I was SO EXCITED to see that last night - I only got 3 lenses done last night before I had to head to bed, but I'll be getting started on the conversion today big time - my goal is to have all of my lenses updated with new links by the end of the weekend to maximize the 5% bonuses they're paying out.
